Q & A with Jenny English and Dr Jean Edwards authors of Into Adulthood

Why did you write Into Adulthood?

We wanted to support students through the transition to tertiary study. More young people are staying at home longer, so if the parents understand the age stage better - and thus their student - they will be able to better support their student. We wrote the book because there are no books on this topic for parents, and the demand from parents to attend the workshops we run was tremendous. The parents who attended our workshops and focus groups were eager for information and expressed the need for such a book.

How would you summarise your book's key message?

That young people in the 18-25 years age group are going through one of the most intense developmental stages in the life cycle. Parents need to step back and let them go but still be there to support them. Letting go but staying connected is a difficult balancing act that we aim to help them with.

Based on feedback you've received, does any section or aspect of the book appeal to people in particular?

People really like the style of the book, how it speaks directly to parents and enters into dialogue with them. There have been many comments on the wisdom based on our experience that is reflected in the book. People comment on the compassion that is conveyed and say they think about their young person with more empathy and care after reading the book.

What would be your advice for readers?

By reading this book, parents will be better prepared to cope more effectively with the challenges of this stage in their family life. Both they and their kids would feel the benefit.
