Dr Maria Pallotta-Chiarolli is internationally recognised for her publications on gender, ethnicity and sexuality. She is Senior Lecturer in the School of Health and Social Development at Deakin University; Honorary Lifelong Patron of PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Gays and Lesbians) Victoria.
Why did you write When Our Children Come Out?
To provide exemplary stories and practical strategies for families, schools and communities to use in supporting GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender) young people.
How would you summarise your book's key message?
Love and support all GLBT young people in our families, schools and communities. It is a human rights issue, it should be what we all do anyway, and there's lots of ways to do it.
Based on feedback you've received, does any section or aspect of the book appeal to people in particular?
The experiences of parents, the experiences of young people, the photos and cartoons, the fact that religious fundamentalism is being strongly challenged. I also hear that the tables, checklists and the outspoken approach that does not accept excuses that justify homophobia are also very popular.
Any final advice for readers?
